Essential Job Functions
The Real Estate Loan Underwriter is responsible for reviewing and evaluating loan applications, ensuring all documentation aligns with underwriting guidelines, and making final eligibility decisions. This role involves detailed financial analysis, sound judgment, and strict adherence to regulatory standards. As part of a high-performing team, the Real Estate Loan Underwriter collaborates with stakeholders to facilitate accurate and efficient loan processing while upholding the company’s commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Loan Application Review: Conduct thorough evaluations of loan applications and supporting documents, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to underwriting standards.
- Financial Risk Assessment: Analyze borrower creditworthiness and property viability to determine financial risks and identify potential exceptions.
- Decision Making: Approve or reject loan applications based on detailed analysis, clearly documenting and communicating decisions to relevant stakeholders.
- Appraisal Analysis: Review incoming appraisals to ensure they align with company guidelines, highlighting and addressing discrepancies.
- Compliance Management: Ensure all processes and documentation comply with regulatory and company policies.
- Collaboration and Reporting: Work closely with directors and other underwriters during credit review meetings. Prepare detailed reports on assessment findings for leadership and executive team members.
- Communication: Collaborate with the sales team to assess and approve exception requests, providing clear and actionable feedback.
- Loan Condition Specification: Define and communicate necessary loan conditions to mitigate risks and ensure successful closings.
Position Requirements
- 4+ years of underwriting experience in residential or real estate-focused lending.
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field.
- Strong analytical skills, including critical thinking, data analysis, and problem-solving.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and underwriting software tools.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Exceptional communication skills to effectively liaise with internal teams and external stakeholders.
